Sania became No. 1 tennis player in Asia
[Mon Jan 28, 2008]Despite being consistently caught into controversies and injuries, Sania led her way to become No. 1 player in Asia. According to the latest WTA ratings released on Monday, Sania became No. 1 player in Asia overtaking the Chinese player Na Li. Li is currently ranked 32nd, while Sania is ranked 29th in.
After a third round exit from Australian Open, Sania earned some more points to climb to 29th position. Sania lose to Wimbledon winner Venus Williams in the third round. She also had a good run at women's doubles; reaching third round along with Aussie partner Alicia Molik. However she dropped in doubles ranking by five spots to 23rd position.
On the other hand, she had good run in mixed doubles along with compatriot Mahesh Bhupati. Sania-Mahesh turned as runner-up in mixed doubles of Australian Open.
