Injury pulls out Sania from French Open
[Sun May 18, 2008]After a surgery on her right wrist injury in Miami on April 10th, Sania is supposed to play at French Open. But she is still not fine with her injury and pulled out from the year's second Grand Slam event French Open. It's starting from May 26. Sania will be missing her first Grand Slam after playing 13 majors in a row.
Sania's father Imran Mirza, who also is a coach to her said, "Sania has not recovered completely from the surgery. She is not able to stretch her wrist beyond a point and it still hurts at certain angles when playing the forehand. However, she is completely comfortable on the backhand."
Sania's wrist gets injured during the Indian Wells tournament in March. After that she withdrew from Miami tournament and decided to go for surgery instead of keep on playing till it hurt again because she wants to get physically fit before the Beijing Olympic Games in August.
Her father, Imran Mirza said, "This is an Olympic year. We didn't want to take any risk as Olympics is one of her top priorities."
Also Sania is disappointed for missing the French Open. She said, "I'm naturally disappointed at missing the French Open but there are certain things beyond one's control and I hope to be back on the circuit soon."
Now, Sania is expected to play at $200,000 DFS Classic in Birmingham starting on June 9. However, her current ranking is 33 in singles and 19 in doubles.
