Sania advanced to second round of Wimbledon
[Wed Jun 25, 2008]It was a struggling first round match for her but Sania managed to edge out her Colombian opponent Catalina Cas-tano in three tough sets 7-6(3) 3-6 6-2.
Sania won the first set which was a tiebreaker. However the second set was won by the Colombian. In the resulting set, Sania broke the Colombian three times which give her a lead over her opponent. Both the players exchanged the breaks for many times that the match lasted for two hours and 16 minutes. Things look hopeless for India, when Sania took injury time out in the second set. But, she fought courageously and finished the match with a win. Sania is ranked 33rd, while Castano is ranked 146 on current WTA charts.
The day also saw some shocking wins as world no.116 Benjamin Becker of Germany defeated word no.4 Nikolay Davydenko of Russia in three straight sets 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. Also Frank Dancevic of Canada defeated seventh seed and former finalist David Nalbandian in the first round of 122nd Wimbledon championship.
Sania will next play to Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez of Spain for the second round.
