Sania, Sunitha Lose in Women's Doubles Pre-quarterfinals
[Mon Aug 18, 2008]

Sania Mirza and Sunitha Rao gave a tough fight before going down to the top-seeded Russian pair Svetlana Kuznetsova and Dinara Safina in the women's doubles pre-quarterfinals at Olympics. The Indians went down to the Russians in two straights sets 4-6, 4-6.

In the first set, the Mirza-Rao were leading with 3-0. But they lost the four games in a row there after. However Sania held her serve to make it 4-4, but Sunitha lost her serve in the 10th game which helped the Russians to win the first set.

In the second set also the Indian women's were up with 2-1. It was looking like that the Indians will stretch the match to three sets. But, Sunitha failed to hold her serve and also the errors came in between and the Indian lose the set by 4-6.

After retiring in midway from the first round of singles, Sania's participation in doubles was doubtful. But, Sania played the match with brave efforts. She took the help of pain killers and also there was a long tape running from her wrist to shoulder. Sunitha has also played well who has never had experience to play at such level.

The other Indian Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi were also lost to Switz players Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka in the men's doubles quarterfinals at Olympics.
