Sania will lead Asia-Pacific challenge in the World Team Challenge tournament
[Mon Oct 13, 2008]

Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza will represent as lead of Asia-Pacific challenge in the World Team Challenge tournament taking place in Hong Kong next year. This is a new concept in tennis and also the warm up tournament for year's first Grand Slam Australian Open.

The competition will have four teams representing Asia-Pacific, Americas, Russia and Europe. Each team will have three players, who will participate in both singles and doubles. Venus Williams will lead the Americas, Maria Sharapova will lead Russia, while Jelena Jankovic will lead the team of Europe. The other players are not yet announced.

There will be a semi-final draw for the teams, with each tie consisting of singles and doubles rubbers. The two teams which scores the most number of wins overall will progress to the final.

This tournament is a replacement for the JB Group Classic exhibition, which was traditionally a warm-up event for women before the Australian Open. The event will take place from January 7 to 10.
