Sania Advances to Second Round of Wimbledon
[Sat Jun 27, 2009]Sania Mirza makes a winning start at Wimbledon as she enters the second round of singles event defeating Anna-Lena Groenefeld of Germany 6-2, 2-6, 6-2. With this Sania took a 3-0 lead over the Germanian to whom she defeated earlier in 2004 and 2005.
Sania won the first set with ease, but in second set the Germanian gave a good fight and put the match to draw parity. However in the decisive third set, Sania played aggressively by breaking her opponent in the very first game. She won four out of first five games taking a lead of 4-1. However the last three games went with the serve and Sania clinched the match.
For the second round at the tournament, Sania will face the winner between Romanian players Sorana Cirster and Edina Gallovits.
