Sania to begin US Open campaign against Govortsova
[Mon Aug 31, 2009]Just before the year's last Grand Slam- US Open, Sania Mirza was troubled by wrist pain for which she has gone through an acupuncture treatment in her home town Hyderabad. However now she is ready to face the challenges at US Open starting from today. For the first round of the tournament Sania will take on to World No. 64 Olga Govortsova of Belarus. Sania is currently ranked 74th on WTA charts.
It will be the third meet of the Indian and the Belarusian. Their record before is 1-1. In their first meet at Cincinnati 2007, Mirza defeated the Belarusian in two straight sets. While in their second meet at first round of Qatar Open 2008, Sania withdrew from the final set receiving muscle cramps. If this time Sania crosses her first hurdle at the event, she may take on to 10th seeded Flavia Pennetta of Italy.
Meanwhile the other Indian who made to the Grand Slam's main draw is Somdev Devvarman. He is the first Indian male since Prakash Amritraj in 2002 to make to the singles of a slam. He has qualified for the singles draw of the event defeating Jerzy Janowicz of Poland in third qualifying round.
