Sania beats Peer to reach 2nd round of Japan Open
[Mon Oct 12, 2009]Sania Mirza made a winning start at Japan Open by defeating her frequent doubles partner Shahar Peer of Israel in the first round of singles event. Sania defeated Peer in three sets 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and 52 minutes match. Peer was seeded fifth at the event.
For second round, Sania will take on Viktoriya Kutuzova of Ukraine. Kutuzova won her first round match as her opponent Maria Kirilenko from Russia retired after first set 6-2.
Among rest of the women, French player Mathilde Johansson beat 8th seed Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan 7-5, 2-6, 7-5 in the first round. However Francesca Schiavone of Italy and Melinda Czink of Hungary also progressed to second round.
