Sania wins silver at CWG singles
[Tue Oct 12, 2010]The final of CWG tennis singles event was a delightful experience for the audience. Both the players - Sania Mirza from India and Anastasia Rodionova from Australia - gave wonderful performances. Though Sania lose the match, she gave good fight to her opponent. After the match she said, "I think what's important is that I gave my best. It's an honor to be playing for my country."
Rodionova defeated Mirza in a three sets 6-3, 2-6, 6-6(7-3). The match lasted for 2 hours and 13 minutes. Sania managed to save four match points in the third set, but lose the crucial point in the tiebreak just to handover the gold medal to the Australian.
Sania was favorite of the crowd at the Games; however the constant and loud cheering up of the crowd made Rodionova frustrated. The first set had seven break points, out of which 5 were of Sania's serve. Rodionova managed to hold on her serve and won the first set with 6-3. However the cheering from the crowd boosted Sania's spirit in second set making her win the set by 6-2. The third set was tough for both the players leading to a tiebreaker. By the time Rodionova was angry with the continuous cheering from audience. However she finally managed to get back her composure. Meanwhile the typical double fault from Sania made the Australian win the tiebreak as 7-3.
However, in men's singles, Somdev Devvarman won gold medal for India.
